World Public Relations Day: Nigeria at the Centre of Global Communication
On behalf of the Governing Council and members of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), I am delighted to join the global community of communication professionals in marking the 2026 World Public Relations Day, themed "The Golden Age of Strategic PR."
This year's theme affirms what NIPR has long advocated, that public relations profession has evolved beyond media relations and messaging into a high-value, C-suite leadership function grounded in relationship capital, strategic foresight, and trusted counsel. Today, public relations practitioners are Boardroom strategists, reputation architects, and custodians of institutional credibility who are shaping decisions at the highest levels of governance and leadership for professional progress and national development.
Interestingly, as our profession celebrates golden age, our country, Nigeria, is set to host the world and give the biggest, brightest and boldest World Public Relations Forum (WPRF) to the global community, scheduled for 15th - 21st November, 2026 in Abuja. This landmark event is expected to convene 3,000 delegates from across 126 member-countries of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, including Presidents of countries, industry leaders and regulators, scholars, and communication executives.
Hosting the WPRF in this country affirms Nigeria's ascension as a strategic voice in global reputation discourse. It implies that Nigeria is no longer merely a participant in the business of global reputation management, but has become hub for communication excellence.
Complementing this milestone, NIPR is currently building the University of Public Relations and Leadership (UPRL), which stands in history as the first specialized sector-based university in the world dedicated exclusively to Public Relations and Leadership studies. Developed under a Triple Helix partnership involving government, professional institutions, and global strategic partners, UPRL is designed to produce the next generation of strategic leaders and advisers equipped for C-suite counsel, crisis management leadership, and nation-building. Its inauguration, scheduled for 20th November, 2026, will be one of the flagship activities of the WPRF.
Again, Nigeria will be birthing another global history and legacy with the commissioning of the biggest national public relations secretariat in the world same November this year. All these landmark achievements point to the greatness of Nigeria and her growing influence in global communication ecosystem. Therefore, we have cause to celebrate this day in Nigeria, the dawn of golden age of Strategic Public Relations.
Significantly too, today, Africa's professional communication bodies, with NIPR among the founding signatories, announced ‘The Africa Declaration on the Professionalisation of Public Relations and Responsible Communication’, a continental charter for shared standards, ethical accountability, and continental commitment to further deepen and advance a responsible public relations practice in Africa. This Declaration acknowledges the NIPR model for the continent, that professional independence and governmental backing can coexist, to facilitate the expected harmony to propel the professional acceleration of public relations for development of our continent. This charter will be formally signed at the World Public Relations Forum in Abuja this November, meaning that Nigeria will host not only the world's PR community, but the founding moment of Africa's shared professional future.
As the profession enters this golden age, NIPR remains resolute in equipping Nigerian practitioners with the strategic acumen, ethical grounding, and relationship intelligence required to sit confidently at decision-making tables, both locally and globally. Public relations is no longer just a support function; it is now strategic development capital.
On this World Public Relations Day, I call on all practitioners to rise to the demands of this new era, to lead with insight, counsel with integrity, and build with trust the relationship capital that defines strategic influence today.
Happy World Public Relations Day to all our members and colleagues worldwide!
